Road Trip - Day 36

We stayed at the Lewis and Clark last night. The lady there helped us with a little history of Three Forks. This Motel was the old Train station, moved here to become the  motel it is today. She has a post card with the train station dated...wait for it....1918...the year my mother was born here.

She told us that the old hospital is still in town, moved to a location to be an apartment bldg. Here it is! The lady at the museum verified that this is the hospital which was there in 1918...has to be the one mother was born in.

Here is the museum...no record was to be found of my grandparents...they took my information and will contact me if they find any record of them...nice people...and they are proud of their little town.

Fred, we took your advice...this was a great place for a delicious brunch....had to take with us to snack on later. About the name...Montana Wheat Bakery??? Still, I highly agree with you...a must stop!

After brunch we backtracked...Nancy wanted to see this "Buffalo Jump park. The location of the bluff the Indians used for years to harvest meat for the winters. They used almost every part of the Buffalo, bones and all, using the fur and hide for clothing and tents, etc.

This was a warning at the beginning of the trail to the observation place. I HATE snakes, so Nancy said I could wait here while she went up...sheesh...I had to protect her!

This is the bluff, and the bare land below is where the buffalo landed and were "prepared". (no snakes yet)

We made it back from the observation place (no snakes!) to a table with these two furs...a wolf and a young buffalo hides.

"Ranger Ann Ore" explained how the Indians would put the wolf, or other smaller animal hide over themselves, taunt the lead buffalo to chase them, they would run, leading the buffalo to the bluff. They had an area they could jump down to. The buffalo would follow and...you can guess the rest.
Thanks, Ranger Ann.
The rest of the day spent on the hiway all the way to Missoula, MT where we will spend the night...getting an earlier time than we have...should get a good night sleep and head the Tri City area.  "night.
